Denpasar, the capital of Bali, has attractions for everyone. Denpasar is known for its beautiful white sand beaches. Kuta Beach, on one side of Denpasar, is a surfing mecca during the day and known for it’s nightlife in the evening.

Sanur Beach, on the other side, is calm and has a gentle surf. It is wonderful for waders, sunbathers, paddle-boaters and, with a breeze, wind-surfers. Sanur Beach is also known as the best place to watch a sunrise.

For the history buffs a trip to Puputan Square is a must. Puputan, meaning mass ritual suicide, is a memorial dedicated to several mass suicides in Denpasar. The most famous being the 1906 Badung Puputan in which a Dutch Force landing at Sanur Beach, was surprised to find no one to resist them. They came upon a procession of people from the palace. In front was the Raja in cremation robes. The procession stopped and the Raja allowed a priest to plunge a dagger into his heart, whereupon, all of the palace dwellers killed each other and themselves, their way of resisting. The Dutch opened fire, due to a lone gunshot, resulting in the death of 1,000 Balinese that day.

And one cannot go to Denpasar and not visit a temple. A beautiful one is the Jagaynatha Temple in the heart of Denpasar. Jagat, meaning world, is famous for its impressive structure. Hindu stories about gods and goddesses are carved upon its walls. A large statue of a demon stands outside protecting the temple.
